Family Fun Day: Calvary Church, 16100 S. 104th Ave., Orland Park, will host its second annual free Family Fun Day starting at 10 a.m. Aug. 17. Entertainment includes illusionist Frank O’Neal at 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., The World of Reptiles at 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. and Christian heavy-metal band Dumpstar at 3 p.m. Also there will be free mini spas for moms and games for children. Book Sale: First Christian Church, 1045 Dixie Highway, Chicago Heights, will have a book sale 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 17 and a bag sale 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 18. Thousands of books will be sorted and categorized, including rare and vintage books. There also will be audio books, records, cassettes, CDs, puzzles, greeting cards and DVDs. Free Meal: A free meal will be served at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Menard Center, 90th Street and Menard Avenue in Oak Lawn. Up to 100 meals will be served on a first come, first served basis to people who could use a free meal or want to share a meal with others. The “One Community: One Meal” program is a joint venture of the Oak Lawn Clergy and Religious Workers Association, the Muslim American Society and the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview. An interfaith team of Christians and Muslims is working together to plan, prepare and serve the meals. A similar meal will be served at 6 p.m. Sept. 15. Information: the Rev. Car Show: Trinity Lutheran Church, 97th Street and Brandt Avenue, Oak Lawn, will host a classic car show noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 18. Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories. Entry fee is $15 and includes a hot dog lunch. The day’s activities will include games for children and adults, face-painting, inflatables, bean bag toss and music. Tacos: Thornton United Methodist Church, 712 Chicago Road, will host its monthly ministry fundraising dinner 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21. Menu is tacos with Spanish rice, beverage and dessert. Carnival: St. Albert the Great Parish will host its annual carnival Aug. 22 to 25 at a new location, the northeast corner of 79th Street and Harlem Avenue in Bridgeview. There will be live entertainment nightly, a beer garden, food, rides and games. A mega pass for all four days is $45 if purchased by Aug. 21. Block Party: St. Damian Church in Oak Forest will host a block party noon to midnight Aug. 24 at 155th Street and Long Avenue. Mass will be at 5 p.m. There will be food vendors, a beer tent, bean bag tournament, children’s activities, a magician, pinatas at 2 and 4 p.m., dog parade and live music including Phil and Amy with oldies but goodies and Al Mattaliano on keyboard with dancing and a sing-along. Car Show: Knights of Columbus Council 967 will host a charity car show Aug. 24 in the St. Fabian parking lot, 8300 S. Thomas Ave., Bridgeview. Registration is 9:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 24 with awards presented at 3 p.m. Entertainment by DJ Mike the “Italian Stallion.” Proceeds are for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and REGAP (REtired Greyhounds As Pets) of Illinois. Registration is $20. Free admission for spectators.
Sign Dedication: Christ Lutheran Church, 14700 S. 94th Ave., Orland Park, will dedicate its new outdoor sign following worship services at 5 p.m. Aug. 24 and 8 and 10 a.m. Aug. 25. The sign was built in celebration of the congregation’s 125th anniversary. Information: (708) 349-0431.
School Picnic: St. Paul Lutheran Church and School, 4660 W. 94th St., Oak Lawn, will host its annual outdoor worship service and picnic at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 25 in the picnic grove. A variety of food items such as corn-on-the-cob, sauerkraut, German potato salad and desserts also will be available. Anniversary Celebration: First Baptist Church of University Park, 450 University Parkway, will celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Rev. Reginald W. Williams Jr.’s ministry at the church, Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. A Gospel Explosion Musical will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 30 at the church. Religious Education: Registration has started for St. Joseph Parish Religious Education classes for students in first through eighth grades. The classes will be 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sundays beginning Sept. 8 at St. Joseph School, 5641 S. 73rd Ave., Summit. The classes are designed for students who do not attend a parochial school on weekdays and who wish to learn about the Catholic faith or study to receive the sacraments of first communion or confirmation.
