Weight Loss Program for Children and Teens: Palos Community Hospital offers the Shapedown program, a specialized family-centered program that promotes good nutrition, a healthy self-image and safe short- and long-term weight loss. Led by registered dietitians and fitness experts, the Shapedown class is offered in separate sessions for teens ages 13 to 17 and for children ages 9 to 12. A free information session about the program is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 28 and the next 12-week session will begin Sept. 11 at Palos Health and Fitness Center, 15430 West Ave., Orland Park. Wellness Wednesday: Orland Township is hosting “Wellness Wednesday” 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 28 in the Orland Township Activity Center, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave. Orland Park. An appointment is necessary. Residents can have their blood pressure and blood sugar checked by a registered medical professional. A basic cholesterol screening is offered for $5 and the test requires a 9- to 12-hour fast. Low Vision: Research and new treatments available to people with macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss in people older than 50, will be discussed at a free seminar at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center, 8125 W. 171st St., Tinley Park. Bariatric Support Group: Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with BMI Surgery will host a free bariatric support group for people who have undergone weight loss surgery.
