WELLNESS WEDNESDAY: Orland Township hosts Wellness Wednesday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Orland Township Activity Center, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave. Orland Park. Residents can have their blood pressure and blood sugar checked by a registered medical professional. A basic cholesterol screening is offered for $5 and the test requires a nine- to 12-hour fast. SEPTEMBER FLU SHOTS: Orland Township offers flu shots from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at the township office, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., Orland Park. Township residents also can get their flu shots from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 9300 W. 167th St., Orland Hills. Vaccines for residents ages 19 to 65 are available for $20. Ages 18 and younger who are Medicaid-eligible, Native American or uninsured may receive a vaccination for no charge. Residents older than age 65 with Medicare Part B also are eligible to receive the immunization for no charge. A Medicare Part B card must be presented at the time of vaccination. BARIATRIC SUPPORT GROUP: Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with BMI Surgery hosts a free bariatric support group for individuals who have undergone weight-loss surgery. WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY: Experienced gastric bypass surgeons offer a free session about “Obesity & Your Health: Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for You?” at 5:45 p.m. Wednesdays at BMI Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Participants will learn about the advantages and risks of traditional and laparoscopic bariatric weight-loss surgery including the Realize and Lap-Band gastric band systems, find out who is a candidate for the procedure and hear from area patients about their experiences. AUTISM SUPPORT: A free support group for parents or caregivers of children with autism meets from 7 to 9 p.m. the last Thursday of each month at Trinity Evangelical Covenant Church, 9230 S. Pulaski Road, Oak Lawn. The group, in partnership with the Southwest Cook County Chapter of the Autism Society of Illinois, will help clarify misconceptions, answer questions, provide professional guidance and identify resources.

BREAST-FEEDING SUPPORT GROUP: The Silver Cross Birthing Center’s certified lactation consultants host a free support group meeting from 10:30 a.m. to noon for English-speaking mothers and 12:30 to 2 p.m. for Spanish-speaking mothers on Friday in the hospital’s conference center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. BASELINE CARDIAC RISK ASSESSMENT: Silver Cross Hospital offers a complimentary box of dark chocolates from Dan’s Homemade Candies to people who come to the Silver Cross Health Center, 12701 W. 143rd St., Homer Glen, for a baseline cardiac risk assessment. The $40 screening includes measurements of high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels, blood glucose level, blood pressure level, body mass index, a 12-lead electrocardiogram, history and lifestyle evaluation and a personal phone consultation with a cardiovascular nurse to review results and answer questions. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP: A free grief support group meets at 2 p.m. Mondays at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, 1 Ingalls Drive, Harvey. The group provides a safe place for participants who have experienced the loss of a loved one to grieve with others who have had similar experiences, share feelings and start the healing process. ADULT VACCINATION DISCUSSION: An internal medicine and geriatrics physician discusses the risks associated with attracting flu, pneumonia, shingles, hepatitis B, tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough as an adult; how one can protect himself or herself with and without immunization; and where one can go to get vaccinated. MEDICAL EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM: Orland Township Health Services offers a medical equipment loan program to all Orland Township residents as well as unincorporated Orland Township and Tinley Park residents. For those in need of temporary equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, canes, walkers, shower equipment and other items, the Nurses’ Closet can be a convenient option. Information: (708) 403-4222.

CPR AND FIRST AID CLASSES: Moraine Valley Community College, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills, offers cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid classes for individuals, employees of small businesses and health professionals during the fall semester. ORLAND WELLNESS PROGRAM: Orland Township residents in need of medical services may purchase a discount Wellness Program voucher at Orland Township, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., Orland Park, during office hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. The program offers services at a discount of up to 50 percent. Services include adult and children’s physicals ($40 and $35), podiatry screenings ($30 and $25 for seniors), dental examinations and cleanings ($50), nutrition consultations ($40), vision examinations ($45) and chiropractic examinations ($45). Residents may choose a participating doctor from the program’s list, which can be found at orlandtwp.org. REHABILITATION SUPPORT GROUP: Ingalls hosts a free monthly rehabilitation support group for individuals and families affected by amputation, multiple sclerosis or stroke. The next meeting is from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, 1 Ingalls Drive, Harvey. The group’s goal is to bring individuals and their families together to help restore quality of life. KIDNEY AND DIABETES SCREENING: Ingalls Memorial Hospital and the National Kidney Foundation are teaming to offer free kidney and diabetes screenings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Matteson Community Center, 20642 Matteson Ave. Screenings include blood pressure, blood sugar, body mass index, waist circumference, urinalysis and a private consultation with a medical professional about one’s results. CESAREAN CHILDBIRTH CLASS: Expectant parents preparing to experience a cesarean birth are invited to attend a cesarean childbirth class from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 6 in Silver Cross Hospital’s conference center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. The class covers information for cesarean preparation, the surgical procedure and anesthesia, the recovery period and the hospital experience. BETTER BREATHERS SUPPORT GROUP: The Ingalls Better Breathers Club is a free support group that offers a topics relating to lung disease and lung health by experts in the field. FALL RISK PROGRAM: A family practice physician hosts a free program titled “A Delicate Balance” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at Silver Cross Hospital, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Families are invited to learn about what causes a fall or loss of balance, how to identify areas of weakness, how to safeguard the home and tips to avoid harmful falls. During this class, children will learn about what to expect including how to handle their feelings toward their new sibling. Participants also will practice interacting with a baby. MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PRESCRIPTION DRUG PROGRAM: Attendees can learn about options and how to protect one’s self from some of the expenses Medicare doesn’t cover from Blue Cross Blue Shield. GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE: Attends can learn how heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease can lead to Barrett’s esophagus, the causes and symptoms of GERD and the specialty treatment options offered from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Silver Cross Hospital, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. A nine- to 12-hour fast is required, but participants should drink water prior to the lipid test. The price of the test is $25 for residents or $30 for nonresidents. Free blood pressure testing and glucose testing for $5 are also available on this day. An appointment is necessary and participants must bring proof of residency on the day of testing. PREPARED CHILDBIRTH ONE-DAY CLASS: Silver Cross Hospital offers a one-day prepared childbirth class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 at Silver Cross Hospital, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Participants will receive instruction from a registered nurse on breathing, relaxation and floor exercise techniques. She also will review the labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum processes.
