Outfitted in their dress uniforms, more than 30 students from the Air Force Junior ROTC program at Shepard High School recently visited Midway Airport to salute veterans who were returning after spending a day in Washington, according to a press release from Community High School District 218.
The veterans had gone on a day trip via Honor Flight Chicago, an organization that sends veterans to the nation’s capital at no cost to them so they can tour historic sites and memorials.
Veterans fly out of Midway early in the morning and return in the evening and are greeted on the public concourse by military service personnel, service bands, families, friends and volunteers, the release said.
Junior ROTC program director Maj. Dan Johnson and Chief Bill Foster brought the students to Midway in what has become a Shepard tradition, with a group from the Palos Heights school joining families and friends of veterans for the festivities for the past four years, the release said.
