Free Meals: Holy Cross Church is serving a free community meal on the second Tuesday of every month. Children are welcome. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and dinner starts at 5 p.m. and is served until 6:30 p.m. The church is at 4041 W. 120th St., Alsip. Those who need a ride can contact Joan at (708) 597-9477. The church also has a food pantry from 4:30 to 6 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month.
Drug Awareness Event: “Talking Smack: The Truth About Drug Use and High School” is a two-part educational series that aims to empower families, schools and communities to prevent drug use and increase resiliency among youth. Session No. 1 is slated for 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Jacob’s Well Church, 3450 W. Maple, Evergreen Park. The session is to feature guest speaker Nick Gore, a frequent speaker at high schools throughout the Chicago area. He shares his journey from drug use to abuse to heroin addiction, treatment and recovery, and is a motivational and influential speaker for youth and adults alike, according to the event organizers.
