Service dog group seeks volunteers

Updated: September 29, 2014 12:03PM

Heartland Service Dogs, Inc., a Mokena-based nonprofit, is seeking volunteers to raise puppies for 18 to 24 months to help them become service dogs, according to the organization’s website.

During this time, they attend obedience classes and work on service dog commands that the dogs will need to know for advanced training. Puppy raisers take the dogs into public settings, such as shopping malls, restaurants, traveling, doctor offices, school and many other places, according to the website. Socialization is critical in raising a working dog that is not bothered by new environments or experiences, it said.

Heartland Service Dogs aims to improve the lives of adults and children with mobility, hearing, seizure and other disabilities, throughout Illinois.
