When Kevin Kennelly attended White Sox games, he always paid close attention to relief pitchers warming up in the team’s bullpen.
Kevin, 17, was a relief pitcher for the Mount Carmel High School baseball team. He learned the nuances of pitching by watching professional pitchers prepare to enter a game.
“Our season-tickets seats are in Row 2 on the aisle, immediately beside the White Sox bullpen. He used to love watching the pitchers warm up from those seats. It gave him a lot of perspective on the pitcher’s motion,” said Loretta Kennelly, Kevin’s aunt.
Kevin died July 6 of blunt force trauma to the head two days after he was involved in a fight on a beach in Indiana. A Chicago man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated battery and battery in Kevin’s death, police said.
Kevin’s classmates, friends and family will gather at U.S Cellular Field Aug. 16 to remember him and raise money for the scholarship fund created in his memory.
The While Sox play the Cleveland Indians. The game begins at 7:10 p.m. Tickets are $40.
“We really wanted to do this for the kids before they went back to school,” Loretta Kennelly said. “It’s tough to do so soon (after Kevin’s death), but the community has been so incredible.”
The Kennelly family have not decided on the specific details of the scholarship, but funds will benefit students from Mount Carmel and St. Barnabas schools, Loretta Kennelly said.
“We’re still formulating exactly what it’s going to be,” she said.
The family also is selling T-shirts that resemble Kevin’s Mount Carmel baseball jersey. The suggested donation for a T-shirt is $20.
Requests for T-shirts have come from Mount Carmel alumni across the country, including Hawaii, Loretta Kennelly said.

Monetary donations also can be made to the Kevin F. Kennelly Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, Beverly Bank, 10258 S. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60643.
