Religion Briefs For Jan. 13

Hunger Walk: Plans are being formed for the 2012 South Suburban CROP Hunger Walk, scheduled for 1 p.m. April 22, beginning and ending this year at St. Paul Community Church, 18200 Dixie Highway, Homewood. In 2011, there were 28 participating congregations, organizations and businesses. The goal for the 2012 walk is to raise $27,000, one-fourth of which will be divided among seven local food-providing agencies. The remainder goes to help fight famine throughout the world. New Service Times: Calvary Baptist Church, 801 E. Glenwood-Dyer Road, Glenwood, now holds Sunday School at 9:30 a.m., devotions at 10:45 a.m. and church service at 11 a.m. Sundays. A nursery is available for young children during church. Information: (708) 758-2300.

Parable Play: The “I Witness Players” of Oak Lawn Bible Church, 9435 S. 54th Ave., will present the play “Baggage Claim: A Modern Day Parable” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 5 p.m. Sunday. Presentation: St. Mary Immaculate Parish, 15629 S. Route 59, Plainfield, will host a presentation on “The Discipleship of the Crucified Messiah in the Gospel of Mark” by the Rev. Arts Program: The Presbyterian Church in Orland Park, 13401 S. Wolf Road, offers “W.O.W. Arts for Kids” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays starting this Wednesday through March 14 for children in first to sixth grades. Program includes games, music, art projects and pizza supper, as well as events such as a bowling party and art show. Cost is $50 per child, $25 for additional children from the same family. Sexuality: The Winter OWL program at the Beverly Unitarian Church, 10244 S. Longwood Drive, Chicago, is a 12-week program on sexuality for seventh- to ninth-graders starting with a mandatory parents meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Meetings for students take place on subsequent Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. The program is designed to help students make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. Sight Impaired: OASIS, Orland Area Sight Impaired Support, meets at 12:30 p.m. the first and third Thursday of each month at Orland Park Church, 7500 W. Sycamore Drive. Volunteers Needed: The Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Catholic Charities is seeking volunteers age 55 and older to provide assistance for a variety of local activities. Volunteers can deliver meals to a homebound senior, mentor a child, visit lonely seniors in nursing homes or help coordinate craft projects at a senior center. Catholic Charities will match a volunteer’s interests with available opportunities. Catholic Charities will provide supplementary insurance, mileage and meal reimbursement during volunteer service.
