When Mariano’s Fresh Market opens at 6 a.m. Tuesday in Frankfort, shoppers will find more than a grocery store.

It’s also a place to dine, grab a coffee or a smoothie, stop for a vaccine and work from your laptop.

As employees polished glass, stocked shelves and put the finishing touches Friday on the 74,000-square-foot store, chief executive Bob Mariano said “you have to push the boundaries” by offering a variety of choices in groceries and dining options.

“The customer is always evolving,” Mariano said, explaining how he has sought to keep up with them in his 41 years in the grocery business. “We provide the basics, but we tantalize with the new.”

Mariano wants customers to not only shop at his stores but view them as a dining option as well.

For those who don’t like to shop hungry or just want more choices for the family, Mariano’s has a sushi bar, a Vero coffee and gelato bar, a soup and salad bar and a “hot” bar with daily features such as a Far East Feast on Monday, Latin Fiesta on Tuesday, Friday fish and Sunday brunch.

If that’s not enough choice, there’s also a create-your-own-sandwich bar. And you can buy meat or seafood and have it grilled and ready to eat.

In the southeast corner of the store is the atrium, with live trees to shield cafe diners from the rest of the store. It offers free wi-fi and a great view of U.S. 30.

“Dining in the store is part of the shopping experience,” Mariano said. “We are trying to create an environment where people feel comfortable sitting down and having a meal.”

The Frankfort store is debuting a new feature that will be in all future stores — Todd’s BBQ, where meats are smoked daily. Shoppers can choose to take it home or sit at the BBQ bar and have some pulled pork or brisket with three different types of sauces.

Another feature being introduced in Frankfort is a trail mix bar, where shoppers can create their own concoctions for $6.99 per pound.

“People are more interested in food today. They’re more interested in nutrients. We have to have more choices for them,” Mariano said.

Among the store’s other offerings are “build your own six-pack” of beer in a walk-in cooler for $8.99 and two aisles with food from around the world (about 3,000 items).

Mariano’s also has all the typical sections — pharmacy, deli, bakery, floral department, fresh meat and seafood.

From all outward appearances, it’s an upscale supermarket, but Mariano said his prices are “affordable.”

“Maybe your initial reaction is that this is too upscale, but come in and see our prices,” he said. “We don’t gouge on some items and low-ball on others. Rather than go so cheap that we have to make up for it, we maintain good prices across the board.”

Does he have a favorite feature?

“I really enjoy the entire store,” he said.
