Donna Vickroy was born on Chicago’s South Side and spent most of her formative years in the south suburbs, sharing a small bungalow with five siblings.
She’s a graduate of Richards High School in Oak Lawn and Illinois State University in Normal.
Vickroy began working for the SouthtownStar way back when it was called the Southtown Economist.
She’s been a reporter, columnist and editor and has dabbled a bit in promotions, organizing contests for the Food section.
Vickroy has received numerous commendations, including the Chicago Headline Club’s Peter Lisagor Award, as well as many Associated Press and Illinois Press Association honors.
She currently lives in Tinley Park with her husband, two daughters and their adorable silky terrier, Handsome Ted.
In addition to scouring the Southland in search of poignant, heartwarming or heartbreaking stories, Vickroy enjoys long walks, reading, gardening, cooking, travel and Chicago Cubs baseball.
She’s been known to frequent Palermo’s 95th restaurant in Oak Lawn, area farmers markets, the Old Plank Trail and local concert venues whenever Jimmy Buffett or Steely Dan are in town.
