Homewood cops fatally shoot man
Homewood police said Sunday they were involved in the fatal shooting of a resident of an apartment building in the village.
Police responded to a report of a disturbance at approximately 6:46 a.m. Sunday at a unit in an apartment building at 956 Olive Road, the Homewood Police Department said in a news release.
Officers were confronted by an occupant of the third-floor unit, and that confrontation “resulted in that occupant being fatally shot by police,” according to the news release.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the man as Brandon Culpepper, 30, who lived in the apartment where he was shot. He was pronounced dead at Ingalls Memorial Hospital at 7:23 a.m.
A state police spokesman said Sunday afternoon that no other information about the shooting was available, referring questions to Homewood police.
The Homewood department said that the public integrity unit of the Cook County state’s attorney’s office had been called in to conduct an independent review of the incident.
Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld said Sunday afternoon that he was told that investigators were still gathering information but couldn’t give any specifics about the shooting.
Homewood officers and state police investigators were still at the building early Sunday afternoon, and officers removed Culpepper’s body from the apartment just before 2 p.m. Residents of the building where the shooting occurred were interviewed by police but they declined to speak to a reporter.
The apartments are directly east of Lions Park and northeast of James Hart Junior High School.
