They and their son were taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, where the couple tested positive for opiates and depressants, and Robert Moore also had cocaine in his system, police said.

Intruders steal from elderly couple

A lockbox that contained $9,800 cash, jewelry and blank checks was stolen June 7 from an elderly couple who were victims of a ruse burglary involving four men, police said.

The lockbox was removed from a bedroom closet that was broken into while the homeowners were distracted downstairs by two of the intruders, according to police.

They said the 88-year-old wife heard noises from the couple’s attached garage in the 8800 block of Bluebird Drive and opened the door to find a large black car in the garage and a man who asked her if her husband were home.

The man grabbed her arm and hurried her into the house, telling her he would be doing work in the yard the following day, police said.

They entered the kitchen, where another man was talking to the woman’s husband, also 88, according to police.

They said that a few minutes later, two other men came downstairs, alarming the residents, and the wife pushed the medical alarm around her neck, which caused the intruders to flee in a black car.
