CountyCare Enrollment Fairs: Cook County residents who are uninsured or underinsured may be eligible to receive no-cost health insurance through CountyCare. Once enrolled in the program, people will receive primary care service, hospitalization, prescription drugs, labs, X-rays, mammograms, mental health and substance abuse programs. Total Lipid Testing: Orland Township is hosting total lipid profile testing 8:30 to 11 a.m. June 20 at 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., Orland Park. Residents can have total cholesterol levels read as well as triglycerides, LDL and HDL cholesterol. A 9- to 12-hour fast is required, however participants should drink water prior to the lipid test. Women’s Health Fair: A women’s health and fitness fair will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 22 at the Markham Park District, 16053 Richmond Ave. The free event will feature a workout session, belly and line dancing, blood pressure screenings, body mass index screenings, breast health education, a hula-hoop contest, Zumba and other activities. Dementia Sensitivity Training: Dementia sensitivity training is being offered to nursing-home staff, public-safety and law-enforcement officers and anyone caring for an elderly dementia patient by Moraine Valley Community College, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills. Caregivers will learn behavioral and care interventions that may be used to prevent, reduce or eliminate difficult care situations. Various challenges related to caregiver stress will be discussed and stress reduction techniques will be provided. Caregivers will learn appropriate communication techniques when caring for patients and will participate in exercises that simulate the symptoms someone with dementia experiences. Heart Screenings: MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island is offering a heart and circulation screening for $40. The “Healthy Heart Exam includes an EKG-monitored exercise test, blood pressure, body mass index and laboratory tests that include total, HDL and LDL cholesterol levels, triglycerides and glucose levels. The $40 screening includes measurements of total cholesterol including HDL and LDL levels, blood glucose level, triglyceride level, blood pressure and body fat; 12-lead EKG, health and lifestyle evaluation and a personal phone consultation with a registered cardiac nurse to review results. Calcium Artery Scoring: Silver Cross Hospital offers a test using a high-speed CT scanner that can measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to determine risk of having a heart attack. Calcium artery scoring is for men 45 and older and women 55 and older who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of premature coronary artery disease. Cost is $200.
