SouthtownStar Athletes On Campus: Sandburg alum Daniel Rizzie makes Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Baseball Team
Xavier University’s Daniel Rizzie was chosen to the 2013 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team after a solid season as the Musketeers’ starting catcher.
The Sandburg graduate batted .283 overall with 15 runs, 12 RBI, one double, one triple and one home run. Rizzie finished with a .342 on-base percentage and a .981 fielding percentage. Rizzie appeared in 30 games, making 28 starts.
In 16 games against Atlantic 10 competition, Rizzie batted .298 with seven runs, one double, one triple, one home run and nine RBI.
A highlight of Rizzie’s season came April 20 in an 8-7 loss to visiting Charlotte. He hit his first career home run as part of a 2-for-4, two-RBI game.
Xavier finished 32-26 overall and 16-8 in the Atlantic 10.
Nick of time
Oak Lawn graduate Nick Pesek was one of three St. Xavier football players named 2013 Preseason All-Americans by the Beyond Sports Network, an online sports media network.
Pesek, a senior running back, was accorded honorable mention recognition after helping SXU to an 11-2 record last season.
In 2012, the Oak Lawn resident led SXU in rushing, totaling 1,125 net yards on 180 carries with 10 touchdowns (8 rushing). Also last season, Pesek also became the first Cougar to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards.
St. Xavier opens the 2013 season at 6 p.m. Sept. 7 against visiting Marian University (Ind.).
Evergreen Park graduate Phil Rizzo was one of three members of the University of St. Francis’ men’s track/cross country team named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District College Division Men’s Track/Cross Country First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
With a 3.88 grade-point average as a history and political science major, Rizzo, a senior, pulled off the All-America trifecta as he earned the honor in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field.
He finished in eighth place for the national champion Saints at the NAIA Cross Country Championships before finishing as the runner-up in the 5,000-meter run at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Rizzo concluded his career with a seventh-place showing in the 10,000-meter run at the NAIA Outdoor Championships.
Four Southland student-athletes received letters for their performances on Millikin University’s baseball team during the 2013 season.
Earning his first letter was freshman Frank Barnes (Providence), while senior Mike Panozzo (Marian Catholic) earned his second letter. Junior John Steele (Argo) received his third letter and senior Jim Panozzo (Marian Catholic) was awarded his fourth letter.
Jim Panozzo started 32 games for the Big Blue as a catcher in the 2013 season, batting .240 with one homer, 12 RBI and 17 runs.
Mike Panozzo made six appearances out of Millikin’s bullpen, working 42/3 innings and posting a 0.00 ERA.
Steele appeared in 12 games for the Big Blue’s pitching staff, making seven starts. He went 372/3 innings, finishing with a 1-4 record and a 7.17 ERA.
Barnes pitched 14 innings and made seven appearances. He was 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA.
