Healthy Lifestyles Weight Management: The Ingalls Wellness Center’s Healthy Lifestyles Weight Management program is a 12-week weight-loss program designed for adults who want to lose weight, improve their overall health and increase physical activity. Breastfeeding Support Group: The Silver Cross Birthing Center’s certified lactation consultants will host a free support group meeting 10:30 a.m. to noon, for English-speaking mothers, and 12:30 to 2 p.m., for Spanish-speaking, Aug. 23 in the hospital’s conference center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Cholesterol Screening: The Palos Township Health Service will hold a cholesterol screening 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at Palos Township, 10802 S. Roberts Road, Palos Hills. A total cholesterol screening is $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents. This test tells only the total cholesterol value. The Cholestech test tells the total value, the high density, the low density, the triglyceride value and the ratios as well as glucose values. A fee of $35 is charged for residents and $45 for non-residents. Fasting is required. The Hemoglobin A1C test can be performed for diabetics, which reflects the average blood sugar levels over the previous three months. No fasting is required for this test. Weight Loss Program for Children and Teens: Palos Community Hospital offers the Shapedown program, a specialized family-centered program that promotes good nutrition, a healthy self-image and safe short- and long-term weight loss. Led by registered dietitians and fitness experts, the Shapedown class is offered in separate sessions for teens ages 13 to 17 and for children ages 9 to 12. A free information session about the program is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 28 and the next 12-week session will begin Sept. 11 at Palos Health and Fitness Center, 15430 West Ave., Orland Park. Wellness Wednesday: Orland Township is hosting “Wellness Wednesday” 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 28 in the Orland Township Activity Center, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave. Orland Park. An appointment is necessary. Residents can have their blood pressure and blood sugar checked by a registered medical professional. A basic cholesterol screening is offered for $5 and the test requires a 9- to 12-hour fast.
