THE SKINNY

Michael Hoover’s 3-yard touchdown run with 4:16 remaining in the game was the difference in a Southland Conference opener in Steger and kept the Olympians (5-0, 1-0) perfect on the season.

TURNING POINT

Trailing 10-6 in the fourth quarter, Rich Central’s Jeremiah Mitchell recovered a fumble at the Bloom 33-yard line, setting up Hoover’s game-winning score.

THE STAR

Rich Central receiver DeQuan Dudley had a couple of outstanding catches, including a 10-yard touchdown. But his biggest and best was a diving 10-yard reception on a third-and-three at the Blazing Trojans 4-yard line. Two plays later, Hoover scored the game-winner.

BY THE MUMBERS

Faced with a fourth-and-five from the Rich Central 10 and 1:54 remaining, Bloom coach Tony Palombi elected to attempt a pass instead of trying a game-winning 27-yard field goal, though kicker Marquis Jones had converted from the same distance earlier. Bloom’s Justus Brantley and Jordan Benavides combined for 149 yards rushing as the Blazing Trojans fell to 3-2 0-1. Ahmad McClellan had 106 yards on 19 carries for Rich Central.

“He’s a first-year kicker and I didn’t want to put that pressure on him.” — Palombi
