A Lincoln-Way North High School senior is the grand prize winner of the 2014 Illinois tollway map cover art contest.

The artwork from senior Crystal Thorns will appear on the official 2014 map cover, according to the Illlinois State Toll Highway Authority.

“I’m thrilled that my artwork will contribute to efforts to promote work zone safety on the Illinois tollway,” Thorns said in a news release.

High school students from throughout the 12 counties served by the tollway system participated in the contest, which had a theme of work-zone safety.

The tollway authority received 65 entries from students at 16 high schools. There were 10 semi-finalists picked for public voting, and the public cast nearly 22,000 votes to get down to four finalists. A panel of judges picked Thorns’ work as the winner.

“Crystal’s artwork will serve as a constant reminder to drivers about the need to drive safely in work zones,” tollway authority executive director Kristi Lafleur said in the release. “We thank all of the students who participated and their art teachers for their guidance, which helped make the contest a great success.”

As the winner, Thorns received a $400 gift certificate from Blick Art Materials and $200 in gift certificates from U.S. Equities to use at oases.
