A family member of a Joliet man who died Oct. 5 during the “Cruise the Creek” bicycling event is suing the Will County Forest Preserve District and Silver Cross Hospital in his death.

Kathleen Lorenc, the special administrator of James Lorenc’s estate, filed the wrongful death lawsuit Nov. 21 in circuit court in Joliet.

James Lorenc, 68, lost control of his bicycle while riding in the Hickory Creek Barrens Nature Preserve in New Lenox Township and fell, striking his head, according to the lawsuit.

It says he was taken to Silver Cross, where he died.

The forest preserve district and Silver Cross operated and managed the bicycle ride, which the hospital also sponsored, and they “created a dangerous situation” by allowing about 1,900 bicyclists start the ride at the same time instead of in staggered starts, the lawsuit says.

The district and hospital failed to ensure that the course was safe from debris or provide effective traffic control, and improperly trained staff members caused danger by telling participants to stop at the bottom of a hill, according to the lawsuit.

Spokesmen for the forest preserve district and Silver Cross Hospital declined to comment on the lawsuit Wednesday afternoon.
