Speak Out for Jan. 6, 2014
While the holidays come to an end I will be happy to be back to the day-to-day schedule. My New Year’s resolution is to work hard, be happy for what I have and keep a positive outlook. While I am not rich I have been blessed in many ways. Happy new year to all and to all a good night.

If the U.S. Congress went home without a paycheck, then maybe they would stick around and do their jobs. Most people don’t get paid if they don’t do their jobs. Why do some government officials get away with not doing their jobs?
Thank you, ex-Gov. George Ryan, for eliminating the death penalty in our state of Illinois. In general, I think every 19-year-old punk convicted of murder will get free home and board.
Where is the Chicago Bears’ defense of old? They were always renowned for their great defense. If there was ever a football oxymoron this year it would be “Bears defense.”
Bob from Oak Forest
It seems Republican Illinois gubernatorial hopeful Bruce Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel are good friends, business associates and even fishing buddies. That makes me very suspicious.

I’m amazed at how many people want to defend drivers driving around with windows that they can’t see through. It’s actually against the law and they can be ticketed. The law also requires you to have mirrors on your car so you can see to your sides and behind. If you block them then you can get a ticket for that too. I think you owe it to the other drivers on the street to drive safely.
To the person complaining about Congress putting Wall Street profits ahead of Main Street: Main Street should be participating in the market growth and invest any money in the market they can afford. If people aren’t in the market it’s their fault and not Congress’ fault. The middle class has many options to participate in the market and can get started for small amounts. Over time it will yield a lot. Parents should get their kids started too. Complaining is not the answer. Making good decisions with the money you have is the answer.
Jim from Palos Heights
About having to do it ourselves: I had to laugh when watching the news on Jan. 2 and hearing that the side streets and alleys were still a mess and some were even impassable in Chicago. I remember when everyone on the block got out with their shovels. There were no snow blowers back then. And after shoveling our walks, we cleaned off our entire street and then did the alley. Now everyone waits for the government to do it for them.
A Speak Out commenter stated that the tea party is for the Constitution. It seems to me that the tea party is only for the parts of the Constitution that benefit them and nobody else.
Frank from Palos Hills
Earlier in his term Gov. Pat Quinn didn’t seem very concerned about the people, but now he’s going to help fix bridges, fix the expressways and help with unemployment and mortgages. I think he’s worried about his re-election.
I love Jesus and I love celebrating his birth at Christmas. As the song “Go Tell It on the Mountain” says, “Go tell it on the mountain over the hills and everywhere.” The signs along Central Avenue made me smile. I am so sorry that someone is offended at others’ joy. I guess we should all hide in our homes and not share any good news with anyone.
Heather from Crestwood
It’s an old saying but it’s true. The only constant in life is change so try to roll with what life throws at you and make the most of it.
To the person claiming that taking a concealed-carry course is teaching how to kill: The class teaches more about safety, and the only reason the weapon would be drawn is due to a life being threatened. The course that taught me how to kill someone was in the military.
Ed C. from Tinley Park
Regarding cleanliness: How could Walgreens say “at the corner of happy and healthy” when not one of the Walgreens I’ve seen have cart-sanitizing wipes? What’s healthy about that, corporate? I think it’s happy for corporate because not having the cost of the wipes means their pockets are lined.
If the definition of communism is that everyone is equal, when the Declaration of Independence refers to all men being created equal was Founding Father Thomas Jefferson speaking as a communist? If we are all equal in the eyes of God, the creator, does that mean God is also a communist? I’m confused, or someone is.
Bill from Oak Lawn
I think for years we’ve been scammed into believing socialized medicine is good. Canada has been one of the so-called shining examples. Tell me then why a friend’s Canadian relative had to wait two years for surgery after finding out she had colon cancer? Luckily she was still alive after two years, but the cancer had ravaged her body. She died six months after surgery. There’s no guarantee, but we all know that the sooner cancer is discovered and surgery performed, the better the odds for life is. Mexico? It took two years for a knee replacement. Here it comes.
