Family Outreach: The Serenity Family Outreach will host “From Helplessness to Hope: The Power of Family in Addictions Recovery,” by Valerie Wise, of South Suburban College, at 8 p.m. April 21 at Jacob’s Well Church, 3450 W. Maple Ave., Evergreen Park.
“Two by Two”: Trinity Lutheran Preschool, 9701 S. Brandt Ave., Oak Lawn offers a time for 2-year-olds along with a special adult (Mom, Dad, Grandma, caregiver, etc.) to have fun with storytime, crafts, music, movement and more from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays for four weeks beginning April 23. The cost is $40 for the four-week session. There is a limit of 10 children per session, and the deadline is April 20 or when the class fills up. Beef Dinner and Auction: St. John’s Lutheran Church and School, 4231 W. 183rd St., Country Club Hills, will hold a Spring Beef Dinner and Auction at 6 p.m. April 26 in the school gym. The menu will include roast beef, mashed potatoes, vegetable, all-you-can-eat salad bar, desserts and beverages. Reservations are required and tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children age 10 and younger and can be purchased by calling the church office at (708) 798-4131. Human Trafficking Forum: Save the Family, Inc. will host this forum from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 26 at Bethlehem Temple M.B. Church, 20 E. 147th St., Harvey. Amy D. Alvarado, from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, and Andria K. Russaw, an adjunct instructor at Olive-Harvey College, will discuss how human trafficking affects the family and society. Spaghetti Dinner: The United Methodist Men at First United Methodist Church of Oak Lawn, 10000 Central Ave., are hosting a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. April 26. Park Cleanup: Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ will worship on April 27 by cleaning up a local park. The congregation will gather at the church, 9411 S. 51st Ave., Oak Lawn, at 9:30 a.m. for a 10-minute worship service and then head to Wolfe Wildlife Preserve to spend the rest of the worship hour picking up trash. An alternate project will be offered at the church for those unable to go to the park. Sharing of stories and lunch will take place starting at about 11 a.m. at the church. The community is welcome. Flower Sale: St. John’s Lutheran Church and School, 4231 W. 183rd St., Country Club Hills, will hold its annual flower sale from May 2 to 11. There will be a variety of hanging baskets, annuals and herbs by the church’s picnic shed. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Hunger Walk: The 2014 South Suburban CROP Hunger Walk is slated for May 4, and will begin and end at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2901 Western Ave., Park Forest. Registration begins at 1 p.m., opening ceremonies at 1:35 p.m., and the walk at 2 p.m. Similar fundraisers nationwide make it possible for Church World Service to respond quickly to disasters around the world. Funds also are used to fight hunger locally through seven Southland agencies: Respond Now and Jones Community Center of Chicago Heights, South Suburban PADS, Rich Township Food Pantry, Lansing Food Pantry, Hazel Crest Community UMC Food Pantry, and First-Wesley Academy Hot Meals Program. The Feinstein Foundation will divide $1 million between all organizations accepting the challenge to raise funds during March and April to fight hunger. The amount received from the foundation is based on the amount raised before April 30. Monies turned in the day of the walk won’t count for the Feinstein Challenge, so participants are encouraged to register early. Golf Outing: St. John’s Lutheran Church and School, 4231 W. 183rd St., Country Club Hills, will hold the school’s first golf outing fundraiser June 18 at Glenwoodie Golf Course, 19301 State St., Glenwood. There will be a shotgun start at 10 a.m. and dinner at 3:30 p.m. Sponsorship opportunities are available at the following levels: $750 platinum sponsor, which includes one foursome, four dinner tickets, hole sponsorship and a page in the ad book; $500 gold sponsor, two golfers, two dinner tickets, hole sponsorship and a page in the ad book; $250 silver sponsor, one golfer, one dinner ticket, hole sponsorship and a page in the ad book; and $150 bronze sponsor, hole sponsorship and half page in the ad book. Golf and dinner tickets are $85 and dinner-only tickets are $30. In addition to Country Club Hills, St. John’s school draws students from Tinley Park, Flossmoor, Homewood, Olympia Fields and Park Forest. Founded in 1849, the school serves students in preschool through eighth grade. About 90 percent of the school’s graduates go to college.
