PALOS HEIGHTS — The bodies of a man and a woman were recovered Saturday from the Calumet-Saganashkee Channel following a boating accident in the southwest suburbs.

The 33-year-old man and 40-year-old woman were not being identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as of 5 p.m. Saturday.

The bodies of the victims were discovered about 1:15 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement from the Coast Guard.

Neither was wearing a life jacket, authorities said.

The search began about 11 p.m. Friday when a 66-foot towing vessel collided with a 19-foot pleasure craft in the Cal-Sag Channel near mile marker 311, according to the Coast Guard.

Search teams from the Coast Guard, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and local authorities “suspended their active search” and began a recovery operation Saturday afternoon, the Coast Guard said. Authorities were using side-scan sonar to search for at least one more person.

“The decision to shift from search-and-rescue to recovery is one of the most difficult decisions imaginable,” said Capt. Amy Cocanour, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, according to the release. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of everyone involved.”
