Greetings, fellow Oak Lawnians! The Bike Psychos Cycling Club hosted its Century Ride on Aug. 17, marking its 30th year of the event. Mother Nature cooperated fully, providing a perfect sunny day. The ride proceeds rain or shine, so weather has a huge impact on turnout.
Bike Psychos president Deanna Skeels said about 550 riders participated compared with about 400 last year on a rainy day. Participants don’t have to be club members and can register the day of the event.
As many as 700 bicyclists have turned out in other years. Riders can sign up for rides of 124, 100, 70, 50 or 30 miles. The round-trip ride starts and ends at Coal City High School.
Skeels said planning for the annual ride begins shortly after each year’s event.
“We’ll start planning for next year at our Sept. 9 meeting,” she said.
Having enough volunteers is critical to a successful Century Ride. Club organizers arrive the day before to prep for the ride and check map routes, address traffic and safety issues and get T-shirts, water bottles and snacks ready.
Bike Psychos members take steps in advance to try to make the ride as safe as possible for the cyclists. Rider safety is always the top priority at all the club’s events, so riders are strongly encouraged to wear helmets and safety gear. For long-distance rides such as the Century Ride, safety and gear (SAG) vehicles are available to repair bikes and assist riders.
“We need at least six SAG drivers and about 35 volunteers,” Skeels said. “Boy Scouts from Orland Park came out to help.We can’t say enough about all our volunteers.”
Skeels was especially surprised and pleased that 2 Bici Bicycle Shop, 8695 Archer Ave., Willow Springs, closed that day, and its employees came out to assist Century Ride SAG drivers. Coal City High School officials also play a big part in the event’s success, keeping the school open on event day so riders can take post-ride showers.
Bike Psychos Club members meet at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of every month from March through October. Because of the Labor Day holiday, the next meeting is Sept. 9. Meetings are at the Stony Creek Clubhouse, 5850 W. 103rd St., Oak Lawn.
Membership fees are $20 for individuals and $25 for families. For membership information, visit www.bikepsychos.org.
