Greetings fellow Oak Lawnians! In this tough economy, I think you’ll agree that we can all use a little extra cash.
And if you happen to love music and have a talent for playing a musical instrument, you could win a music scholarship through the annual contest sponsored by Musichorale, a nonprofit organization at Oak Lawn Community Church, 9000 Ridgeland Ave.
The choir awards four scholarships annually to young musicians attending either elementary or high school. A total of $2,000 is given to two students in both elementary and high school.
First-place winners receive a $750 scholarship to be applied to their musical studies, and second-place winners get a $250 scholarship. First-prize winners also will perform at Musichorale’s Spring Concert on April 10 as well as at its 2011 Christmas concert.
Musichorale director Jeffrey Silhan said the application deadline was extended to Feb. 15 to allow for more contestants to apply. He said at least 10 contestants are needed, and that number had not been met as of this past week.
The instrument competition is open to all music students and is scheduled for February 26 at 10 a.m. for elementary students and 2 p.m. for high school students at the church. Contestants are notified that same day if they are scholarship winners.
Musichorale’s 2010 instrumental scholarship winner was 12-year-old violinist Serena Harnack, who’s also a scholarship recipient at the Academy of Music Institute of Chicago where she studies with faculty member Almita Vamos, her mother, Mandy Harnack, said.
Serena learned about the Musichorale contest from her former teacher at the Community School of the Arts at Wheaton College.
