South Suburban College’s Steven Smith recently received the Chicago Defender “Men of Excellence” award, which recognizes “Chicago-area men who represent excellence in their professional and personal lives every day,” said award officials.
Smith, an adult education instructor and coordinator at SSC, was nominated by his students.
“I feel highly honored, grateful and humbled to receive the ‘Men of Excellence’ award,” Smith said.
“I would like to thank the South Suburban College staff as well as my wonderful students in the adult education program,” Smith said.
“I am so proud that a member of the South Suburban College adult education staff was nominated and selected for an award of this stature,” said Jane Ellen Stocker, vice president of enrollment and community education at SSC.
“We are all proud of Steven and the work he has done to help the youth of our community redirect their lives. An award of this type helps to highlight all of our dedicated staff who daily address the unmet educational needs of students who dropout or fallout of school.”
Smith, a native of Chicago, received a bachelor’s degree from DePaul University and a master’s degree in marketing from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is in the process of completing coursework to receive a master’s degree in education at Quincy University.
