Here is a look at what’s going on in the Southland.

News from the SouthtownStar’s East region includes Chicago Heights, Crete and Homewood.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS

Teacher shares love of chess

Wanikka Vance, a kindergarten teacher at Jefferson Elementary School in Chicago Heights, recently began teaching chess to her students. Members of Bright Knights Chess Club visit Vance’s classroom every Wednesday to teach students a chess lesson.

“I believe that every child deserves to be given the opportunity to excel both academically and athletically, and that the opportunities should be affordable for all parents,” Vance said.

CRETE

Library hosts Acrylic Painting program

Crete Public Library recently held an Acrylic Painting Workshop featuring local artist Rozanne Priebe.

Priebe showed attendees how to tap into their creativity and provided step-by-step instructions on how to paint a picture. Attendees then were able to take their pictures home with them.

Library hosts Battle of Books

Crete Public Library recently hosted Battle of the Books, a voluntary reading incentive program for students in fourth through eighth grades.

Team members read at least six books on the battle’s book lists, and the team that answered the most questions correctly won.

Lbrary officials said the goal of the event was to encourage students to read good books and to have fun while competing.

Library hosts Art Studio program

Crete Public Library recently held its Art Studio program, which studied the works of internationally known glass artist Dale Chihuly.

Children viewed a slide show of Chihuly’s techniques, and program leader April Heide-Kracik showed children how to paint colorful flowing pictures that resembled Chihuly’s works.
