A 5-year-old Chicago Heights, Ill., boy died after rescuers pulled him from Lake Michigan on Thursday afternoon.

Nacere Bradley and his family were among a group of 13 adults and children visiting West Beach outside of Portage when the boy went missing about 4 p.m., authorities said.

Lifeguards found him about 10 minutes later, below the water about 20 yards from shore, according to a news release from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

He was brought to shore where paramedics provided emergency medical care, then took him to Methodist Hospital in Gary, the release said. He was later airlifted to a Chicago hospital.

Bradley, of the 100 block of West 21st Street in Chicago Heights, was pronounced dead at 9:54 p.m. Friday at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

An autopsy has not yet been performed.
