Construction of the Crete Veterans Plaza has been completed at the northeast corner of Main and Exchange streets in Crete. The construction was funded through an Illinois Department of Transportation grant via its Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, and through a donation by the Crete AmVets Memorial Post 84.
The plaza is a tribute to those who have served in the Armed Forces and includes planting areas with symbols representing the five branches of military service, as well as those who were taken as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action.
The plaza also includes a four-sided clock near the intersection.
“We appreciate the sacrifices that our veterans have made for our freedom, and this plaza is a small token of our enduring commitment to reminding all of us what those sacrifices have meant to our nation,” Mayor Mike Einhorn said.
“We especially want to thank the Crete AmVets Memorial Post 84 for their service to the country and our community. Their generous donation has made this project a reality.”
