The Bloom Trail High School Navy JROTC drill team finished third during a recent competition that included 12 teams from various high schools throughout Illinois.
The individual events included armed color guard and unarmed regulation, which requires that all the schools follow the same drill routine and undergo a uniform inspection.
Participating schools also performed armed and unarmed exhibition routines that encouraged creativity on the part of the cadets. The first-year cadets also performed an assigned routine, which wasn’t included in the team scoring.
Individual events were divided into two divisions based on the size of the unit; Bloom Trail’s unit contains less than 300 cadets, which places the team in the small division.
Bloom Trail cadets also took first place in the color guard and armed regulation, second place in the armed exhibition, and third place in unarmed exhibition.
Individual awards were given to Melissa Churchill, who finished eighth in unarmed knockout and third in armed knockout; and Jessica Fleckinger, who finished second in unarmed knockout.
