The new Legislature has taken office, and it looks like it will be a few weeks before anything of substance is voted upon, presuming House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) or Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) see fit to move any bills forward.
I imagine two weeks ought to be enough time for the “newbees” to get briefed on just how things work in Springfield and to whom they are beholding — not the public, but the legislative leaders, of course.
One thing will be for certain again — anything of importance that passes will be what Mike and John want to pass. With Democrats enjoying a veto-proof majority in the House and Senate, the Republicans are neutered and Gov. Pat Quinn is of even less importance to Madigan and Cullerton.
The Senate and House Republicans could all take a two-year fact-finding vacation and nothing of consequence would change. Welcome to Illinois politics, you get what you voted for!
