Marian speech team wins Thornwood T-shirt tourney

Marian Catholic High School’s speech team recently took first place at the Thornwood T-shirt Tournament in South Holland. The team finished with a 425 score.

Speech director Mark Donaway said he credits the diligent, bright students that make up the team for the championship.

“Each student comes prepared and ready to give it their all at every competition,” Donaway said. “The leadership and hard work the team put forth shows in the scores they are receiving.”

Leading team members included Kyliah Thompson, of Richton Park, who placed first in oratorical declamation; Regina Hoyles, of Olympia Fields, who placed first in original comedy; Daniel Blewitt, of Crete, and Kyle Fitzgerald, of Park Forest, both of whom placed second in dramatic duet acting; and Pia Lyander, of Hazel Crest, who placed second in dramatic interpretation.

Three teams placed in humorous duet acting, including Kyle Fitzgerald, of Park Forest, and Regina Hoyles, of Olympia Fields (second); Holly Dankowski, of Park Forest, and Kalyn Des Jardins, of Chicago Heights (third); and DeAngelo Davis, of Lynwood, and Ken Pilota, of Chicago Heights (sixth).

Other leading team members included Hannah Lang, of Monee, who placed second in poetry reading; Kyliah Thompson, of Richton Park, who placed third in poetry reading; Cooper Packard, of Lansing, who placed third in special occasion speaking; Jasmine Jackson, of Country Club Hills; who placed fourth in special occasion speaking.

Team leaders also included Cristen Milliner, of Richton Park, who placed fifth in informative speaking; and placed fifth in impromptu speaking; and Jasmin Weaver, of Calumet City, who placed fifth in oratorical declamation.

Other team leaders included Megan Ringo, of Crete, who placed fifth in radio speaking; Ken Pilota, of Chicago Heights, who placed sixth in radio speaking; and Pia Lyander, of Hazel Crest, who placed sixth in humorous interpretation.
