Students from Zion Lutheran School in Beecher recently competed in the South Suburban Lutheran Athletic League Track Conference at Tinley Park High School.
For two months, 21 athletes in third grade and higher practiced for two to three events for the competition.
Track coaches included Zion athletic director Jordan Hopman and parents Gina Carra, Laura Mills and Ray Smith. Ten schools competed on a beautiful sunny day in events such as relay, individual runs and field.
Seventh-grader Jake Mills took second place in Boys Class A discus with a throw of 86.7 feet and qualified for the state competition. Fourth grader James Radtke placed first in the Boys Class C 1600 meter. Seventh grader Nathan Smith took fourth in the Boys High Jump Class A.
Fourth grader Jacob Brouwer placed second in the Boys Class C discus and finished fifth in the Boys Class C shot put. Fourth grader Joshua Harvey placed fourth in the Boys Class C long jump.
Sixth grader Karl Krudup placed second in the Class B 1600 meter and placed fourth in the Boys Class B shot put. Seventh grader Natalie Mecum placed third in the Girls Class A 800 meter.
“We are very proud of our Zion children,” Laura Mills said. “Everyone competed in the true Christian spirit and gave 110 percent, win or lose.”
”Our student athletes performed tremendously at the SSLAL Conference Track and Field Meet,” Hopman added. “The improvement I have seen over the past two years has been unbelievable. The students as well as our coaches are to be commended for the hard work and dedication that has gone into rebuilding our track and field program.”
