Prairie State offers free English classes

The adult education program at Prairie State College will offer free English as a Second Language, General Education and Spanish GED Preparation classes beginning Sept. 3 at the PSC Adult Training and Outreach Center on the main campus at 202 S. Halsted St., Chicago Heights.
Registration dates are 9:30 a.m. Aug. 7, 6 p.m. Aug. 8, 6 p.m. Aug. 12 and 9:30 a.m. Aug. 13.
A free assessment is required at registration for all programs. No appointment is necessary for the assessment. No children are allowed during the assessment.
Participants need to bring an official government-issued photo identification and proof of public assistance, if applicable.
Students age 16 or 17 must provide documentation proving formal withdrawal from high school.
The English as a Second Language program is designed to help people make the transition from different countries and cultures to American society. The purpose of the program is to teach skills in speaking, reading, writing and listening. Classes are offered twice a week and are held on and off campus.

GED classes offer students an opportunity to complete high school studies and receive an equivalency certificate. The GED certificate is accepted as a substitute for a high school diploma.
