A man charged with driving drunk and causing a crash that killed an elderly couple Thursday near Frankfort was ordered held on $200,000 bail.

The accident happened at 7:36 p.m. at LaGrange and Pauling roads near Frankfort, according to Illinois State Police.

John Wiesch, of Monee, was driving a 2008 Ford F250 pickup east on Pauling when he ran a stop sign at LaGrange and hit the passenger side of a 2013 Toyota Avalon carrying a husband and wife from Mokena, state police said.

The driver, 84-year-old William Slager, was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

His wife, 82-year-old Harriet Slager, was airlifted to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where she died at 11:25 p.m. Friday, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Wiesch was intoxicated and had been drinking, police claim. He was taken to a hospital and later released to police custody.

He remains in the Will County Jail on a felony charge of aggravated DUI causing death and a misdemeanor count of DUI.

He also was ticketed for disregarding a stop sign and operating without insurance, according to the Will County sheriff’s office.

He was ordered held on $200,000 bail, the sheriff’s office said.
