Advantages of co-ed classrooms beneficial to both genders, studies say

As Chicago-area private high schools launch their admissions processes for the 2014-15 academic year, now is the time to consider the best learning environment for your child. A co-ed classroom is enriching in many ways for both male and female students, preparing them in many ways for success in today’s business world.
In a diverse student body, boys and girls make friends easily with both members of their own sex and of the other, providing each with the opportunity to develop respect for their counterparts. The mixed space also better prepares each for their real-world experiences beyond high school.
Two initiatives at Arizona State University have recently launched to lead research on co-educational learning environments. Their findings show that co-ed classrooms serve a higher societal advantage than single-gender classrooms as they better prepare students for a life beyond high school, citing the more time adolescents spend apart, the more that stereotypes are reinforced.
A co-educational environment also provides boys and girls with role models of both genders, giving them the benefits of both mentors and exposure to viewpoints they might not experience in a single-gender classroom.
Both of the ASU initiatives, the American Council for CoEducational Schooling (ACCES) and the Sanford Harmony Program, focus on the dynamics of co-ed learning environments. The programs consistently find that communication skills, problem solving abilities and collaboration skills are all dramatically improved in both genders when boys and girls are learning in the same classroom.
Exposure to the learning styles of each gender in classrooms that encourage collaboration of both genders, allows males and females the chance to develop stronger communication skills that they will carry through life.
