The Bloom Trail Navy ROTC unit recently traveled to Simeon High School to compete against 14 schools from across the Chicago area.
The competition consists of five marching events as well as a personnel inspection. The school’s unarmed and armed regulation teams both placed third, as did the school’s color guard.
In the regulation and color guard competition the teams are graded on how well they all perform the same movements. The teams also perform in exhibition, where the cadets write their own routine. In addition to the marching the cadets undergo a personnel inspection where knowledge and appearance are tested.
The Bloom Trail drill team will compete three more times before the Area Three meet at Great lakes Naval Base. The Area Three meet is the qualifying meet for nationals in Pensacola, Fla.
There also was a knockout competition, which involved 250 individual cadets. In the unarmed competition, Eduardo Nunez placed sixth, while in the armed competition, Osbaldo Nunez placed 10th and James Hayes won first place.
