BRIDGEVIEW

Lyle students visit Brookfield Zoo

Second- and third-grade students at Lyle Elementary School in Bridgeview recently visited Brookfield Zoo. Students had been studying animal classification and learning about the characteristics of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians.

Some students said they particularly liked visiting the Australia house, where they saw fruit bats flying above their heads. They said they also enjoyed getting a close-up look at a lion.

Students take part in toy drive

Students at St. Louis de Montfort School in Oak Lawn recently participated in a toy drive to benefit the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation to help children with cancer. Micaela Eaton and and Daniela Reyes-Binfa, both members of the student council, helped pack the toys to send them to children.

EVERGREEN PARK

Students study ancient civilizations

Fifth- and sixth-grade students at St. Bernadette Catholic Academy in Evergreen Park recently studied ancient civilizations in their social studies classes.

After their recent tour of the ancient Egypt exhibit at the Field Museum in Chicago, each student designed a mummy case.

JUSTICE

Students collect food for pantry

Students and staff at Player Primary School in Justice recently collected almost 400 nonperishable food items for a local food pantry.

Teachers talked with their classes about families in need and the importance of helping others. Each day, early childhood, kindergarten and first grade students brought donations to school. Students counted the items and then graphed their progress.

“This collection for charity is just one way that students of Indian Springs District 109 learn the value of helping others in their community,” said district officials in a news release.
