Former Hillcrest High School art teacher Jean Lewis continues pursuing her passion for art into retirement.

Lewis’ artwork recently was accepted for the Museum of Science and Industry’s Black Creativity Exhibit, which runs Jan. 23 through Feb. 24. Through the Chicago Department of Aviation, she also has two pieces featured at O’Hare International Airport and has been featured in several art shows throughout the Southland.

Lewis’ talent for art presented itself in third grade after she drew a landscape featuring a lone deer. The work impressed Lewis’ teacher, who recognized the talent and rushed to show another third-grade teacher.

Lewis is an alumnus of Thornton Township High School and enrolled in art classes every year of her secondary education. Several of Lewis’ high school creations were chosen for art shows, including a national art show that came to the area during her senior year.

Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in art education from Northern Illinois University. Throughout her teaching career, she also pursued additional master’s degrees in education.

Lewis’ classroom experiences consisted of teaching tenures in Harvey and Matteson elementary schools, followed by nine years as an art educator at Hillcrest High School.

Now enjoying her third year of retirement, Lewis has moved out of her students’ work and back into her own personal craft. She began by creating portraits of ancestors and family members from her own picture albums.
