When comedian John Pinette performed at the Rialto Square Theatre as a co-headliner with comedian Bill Engvall in September 2010, Randall Green, general manager of the Rialto, knew immediately that he wanted Pinette to play a return engagement at the theater.

“I am really happy we finally got a date set for John’s return to the Rialto,” Green said. “There was no question that he really connected with the audience when he was here with Bill Engvall. It was time to get John back in front of his audience. We want our comedians/performers to have a strong connection to the Rialto and its audiences. It makes it easy for the entertainers to return on a regular basis.”

John Pinette will perform Feb. 22 at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet.

“We had been working with John’s agent over the past year to get a return date scheduled,” said Green of the efforts to book the comedian. “It was not hard to get John and his agent on board with a return to the Rialto, it just took some time to get his schedule to mesh with ours.”

Pinette has been entertaining audiences around the world in a variety of ways for more than 20 years. He has enjoyed a long career in stand-up, television, film and stage, which has included touring with Frank Sinatra and appearing as Edna Turnblad in the hit Broadway musical “Hairspray.”

Pinette was named Stand-Up Comedian of the Year by the American Comedy Awards in 1999. Known for his observational and self-deprecating humor, his comedy routines are often filled with references to food, trying to lose weight, personal trainers and dieting.

“I think audiences relate to someone who is not afraid to take shots at themselves,” said Green of Pinette’s appeal. “He is a funny guy and he enjoys making people laugh.”

Pinette’s film credits include “Duets,” starring Gwenyth Paltrow; “Dear God,” starring Greg Kinnear; “Junior,” starring Arnold Schwarzeneger; and “The Punisher,” starring John Travolta. His latest film is “The Last Godfather,” starring opposite Harvey Keitel, which was released in 2010.

Pinette’s television credits include stand-up comedy appearances on “The Tonight Show,” “The Dr. Phil Show” and “The View.” His Comedy Central stand-up special and DVD, “I’m Starvin’” was released in January 2007.

“I think audiences find John a very likeable guy,” Green said. “He doesn’t talk down to them. It’s like having a conversation with a friend about some very funny topics.”
