Documentary photographer the Rev. Don Doll is to receive an honorary doctorate from St. Xavier University and deliver the commencement address at the university’s 2013 Winter Commencement at 10 a.m. Dec. 14, according to a news release from the school.
The ceremony is to be held in the Shannon Center at SXU’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.
Doll is a Jesuit priest whose work has been featured in National Geographic and a number of the “Day in the Life of...” books in the series created by Rick Smolan, the release said.
A two-year project titled “The Jesuits” has taken him around the world. One of his stories from this project, “Finding Ernesto,” aired on ABC’s “Nightline” with Ted Koppel in 1999. Doll has photographed for the Jesuit Refugee Service in Uganda, Southern Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, the Congo, Chad, Southeast Asia and the Middle East since 2005, the release said.
Doll was introduced to photography when he was assigned to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota as a young Jesuit, where he also met the Lakota people. He has authored two books about Native Americans: “Crying for a Vision” and “Vision Quest: Men, Women and Sacred Sites of the Sioux Nation.” A 224-page coffee table book with 188 photographs from Doll’s 50-year career, “A Call to Vision: A Jesuit’s Perspective on the World,” was published in 2012, the release said.
Doll received the prestigious Kodak Crystal Eagle Award for Impact in Photojournalism at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. in 1997 for his many years of work with Native Americans. He also received Nebraska’s “Artist of the Year” award in 2006 at the Governor’s Awards luncheon sponsored by the Nebraska Arts Council, according to the release.
Doll received special recognition in 1976 in the Nikon “World Understanding through Photography” Award, the Robin F. Garland Award in 1988, and first place for “Magazine Feature” in the 1988 Pictures of the Year.
Doll has lived and worked since 1969 at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., where he is a professor of journalism holding the Charles and Mary Heider Endowed Jesuit Chair.
The SXU Gallery will host an exhibit with Doll’s photography titled “Finding and Serving God in All” through Dec. 14 and from Jan. 13 to 17. The exhibit will include photos from Doll’s time with the Jesuit Refugee Service.
A reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 12 will include a presentation by Doll in the SXU Gallery in the Warde Academic Center at SXU’s Chicago campus.
