Karen Doornebos, author of “Undressing Mr. Darcy,” will discuss her writing process and her new book with interviewer Penny Golden during Author Afternoons at 2 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St., Chicago.

Formerly an award-winning copywriter for brands such as Diet Coke and Johnnie Walker, Doornebos switched to tea with her debut novel, “Definitely Not Mr. Darcy,” now published in three countries, according to a press release from the Beverly Arts Center.

“Undressing Mr. Darcy,” her second novel, received four stars from RT Book Reviews, the release said.

“Undressing Mr. Darcy” follows the experiences of 35-year-old American social-media master Vanessa Roberts, who lives a thoroughly modern life. When Roberts’ elderly Jane Austen-centric aunt needs her to take on public relations duties for a man from England who has written a book called “My Year as Mr. Darcy,” Roberts agrees. Hardbound books, teacups and quill pens fly in the face of her ereader, coffee and smartphone until she sees the author perform his “Undressing Mr. Darcy” show to promote his book and help save his crumbling estate.

True to Jane Austen’s legacy of romantic literature, a rocky relationship blooms between the edgy PR woman and stuffy author.

Doornebos grew up in Chicago’s Beverly community and attended Sutherland Elementary School and Morgan Park Academy. She lives in the suburbs with her husband and children.

Copies of “Undressing Mr. Darcy” are for sale at Bookies Paperbacks and More, 2419 W. 103rd St., Chicago, and on Amazon.com. Doornebos will be available to sign books and answer audience questions at Author Afternoons. Admission to Author Afternoons is free.
