Updated: April 3, 2014 6:04AM

St. Xavier University’s Ludden Speech and Language Clinic is open to Chicago-area residents who are suffering from a wide range of communication disorders, according to a release from St. Xavier.

Clinical services are supervised by speech-language pathologists who hold a professional license from the state of Illinois and the certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology and/or audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the release said. SXU students who are preparing for careers in communication disorders conduct the diagnostic evaluations and treatment sessions.

The clinic provides diagnosis and treatment for various communication disorders, with clients ranging from infancy to adulthood, according to St. Xavier. The clinic can provide treatment for a wide range of disorders, including problems in developing and producing correct sounds for clear, intelligible speech; delay or disorder in children’s development of comprehension and/or expression of words and sentences; impairment in the ability to use language symbols due to brain injury, affecting speaking, listening, reading, writing and understanding; stuttering; conditions of hoarseness, nasality, abnormal pitch or intensity or absence of voice after surgical removal of the larynx due to cancer; specific difficulty in the understanding of spoken language often manifested as confusion after oral directions; inability to answer spoken questions and reduced vocabulary development; and problems comprehending and/or producing speech and language due to varying degrees of hearing loss.

Named for its founder, Sister Mary Antonine Ludden, the clinic since 1959 has served more than 6,000 clients of all ages and disorders, according to St. Xavier.

The university is at 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.
