St. Xavier unveils spring concert series lineup

St. Xavier University’s music department will host a series of concerts during the spring semester.

Performances will be held in McGuire Hall (located in the Warde Academic Center), McDonough Chapel or the Performance Space (located at the northwest entrance of the Warde Academic Center on the second floor), all of which are located at SXU’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

All performances are free for SXU students, faculty and staff with a current ID, and for prospective students. Unless otherwise noted, general admission is $6, and admission for senior citizens, visiting students and members of the military is $5.

The Southside Community Band and Wind Ensemble will perform “Postcards” at 7:30 p.m. March 4 in the Performance Space.

The Symphony Orchestra will perform “The Firebird” at 7:30 p.m. March 6 in the Performance Space. Musical pieces include Stravinsky’s “The Firebird,” Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 and chamber music.

The Jazz Combo will perform the works of Duke Ellington, Horace Silver and others at 7:30 p.m. March 21 in McGuire Hall.

An Alumna Recital featuring soprano Michelle Gliottoni-Rodriguez and accompanist Monica Kropidlowski will be held at 3 p.m. March 30 in McGuire Hall.

The Flute Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 4 in McDonough Chapel. Performances include Zayt Lustik, an arrangement by Klezmer flutist Adrianne Greenbaum; an arrangement of Gaubert’s Madrigal; an arrangement of a Haydn London Trio; and Wil Offermans’ “Bamburia.”

A Faculty Recital featuring flutist Irene Claude will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 5 in McGuire Hall.

“El Capitan,” an Opera Workshop production, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. April 11 and 7:30 p.m. April 12 in McGuire Hall. General admission is $10 and is $8 for seniors and military.

Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Combo performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 25 in McGuire Hall.

The Southside Community Band and Symphony Orchestra will perform “Of Stage and Screen” at 7:30 p.m. May 1 in the Performance Space. A diverse mix of concert pops, celebration of the 50th Anniversary of “Mary Poppins,” favorites from Broadway past and present and some radio hits will be performed.

The Jazz Ensemble’s final concert of the spring semester will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 2 in McGuire Hall. Classic compositions from big bands of jazz and a special farewell to the graduating seniors of the ensemble will be included in the performance.

The Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble will perform “Boom Crash STOMP” at 7:30 p.m. May 3 in the Performance Space.

A Piano Showcase featuring director Patricia Lee will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 4 in McGuire Hall. Admission is free.

The music department also will host vocal seminars at McGuire Hall. The seminars are free and open to voice teachers, students and anyone with interest. Seminars include “Master Class for Classical Undergraduate Singers” with master teacher/soprano Carol Shamory and accompanist Monica Kropidlowski from 12:30 to 2 p.m. March 20.
