Here is a look at open auditions in the Southland and beyond.

SUBURBAN YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: Midseason auditions will take place from noon-2 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Music Connection of Frankfort, 9370 W. Laraway Road.

The orchestra is seeking additional members for violin, viola, cello and bass sections. Students must have played their instrument at least two or more years. Current students in the orchestra range in ages from 10-16.

This south and southwest suburban regional youth orchestra meets for rehearsal weekly from 4-5:30 p.m. Sundays in Frankfort. Students have an opportunity to have coaching from Chicago-area professionals as well as enrichment opportunities such as attending professional concerts.

Suburban Youth Symphony performances are scheduled for March and May.

Audition materials will include: two scales of the candidate’s choice and one fast and one slow prepared solo of at least 32 measures.

Students also will be asked to read an excerpt of first movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” and the third movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3,” and to demonstrate sight reading ability.

GAELIC PARK PLAYERS: Auditions for “Try Anything Twice,” a comedy by William Rocke, will take place from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Jan. 23-24 at Chicago Gaelic Park, 6119 W. 147th St., Oak Forest.

Parts are available for four females, ages from 20-70, and three males, ages from 40-60. The show will be directed by Bob Fox, of Lemont.

There is no membership fee, and Irish accents are a never a requirement.

The show will be staged from are April 13-15, 20-22 and 27-29.

ILLINOIS THEATRE CENTER: Now in its 36th year, the Illinois Theatre Center Drama School provides students at all levels with a well-rounded training program.

The schedule for the winter session of acting classes will include Adult Acting Workshop from 7-9 p.m. Mondays starting Jan. 23. This 10-week class focuses on character development, stage presence and audition preparation. Tuition is $80.

There also will be the Children’s Acting Workshop from 4-6 p.m. Wednesdays starting Jan. 25. This 10-week class for ages 6-13 focuses on basic acting technique including movement, voice, diction and motivation. Tuition is $80.

And the Teen Play Production Workshop will take place from 4-6 p.m. Thursdays starting Jan. 26. For ages 14-18, this 20-week doubled session will culminate in the production of a full-length reader’s theater presentation, with two public performances in early June. Tuition is $125.

THE CHANSONETTES: This singing group of south suburban women seeks new members as the Chansonettes begin a new season. Interested individuals who love to sing can contact Mary Anderson at (708) 748-1438 or Yetta Elder at (708) 799-1474.

THE DRAMA GROUP: Nonpaid, non-equity shows with upcoming auditions for the community theater’s 2011-12 season include “Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” (a musical) on Feb. 15 and 17 (adult auditions) and Feb. 18 (children’s auditions) and “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” on May 15-16.

The casting calls will take place at the Drama Group Studio Theatre, 330 W. 202nd St. (off Ashland Avenue and one block north of Marian Catholic High School), Chicago Heights.

Those auditioning should be prepared to read from the script. They also should each bring a photo that the production can keep.

Attendees will be asked to each fill out a theater resume with any prior experience, though none is required.

If the show is a drama or comedy, those auditioning should be prepared to read from the script.

If the show is a musical, those auditioning should be prepared to sing something from the show. If the piece is not from the show, then he or she will need to bring sheet music (in his or her key) for the Drama Group’s accompanist.

Also, those auditioning should wear comfortable clothes and shoes for a dance or movement audition conducted by the choreographer.

“Come on over. We’d love to teach you the theatrical ropes,” officials said. “Start a new hobby with a lot of fun people. Become a part of the Drama Group family.”

Those who prefer to work backstage can offer to serve as set builders, painters, makeup and hair people, seamstresses, lighting people, sound people, stage crew, prop people, decor people, photographers and more.
