Jake Pearson, of Lincoln-Way North swimming, is a two-time state qualifier, finishing 17th in the 500-yard freestyle and 24th in the 200 free in state as a sophomore.
How did you get into swimming?
It was third grade and the local club team sent a flyer home. I’ve always liked the water so I told my mom I wanted to try swimming. She brought me the next day, and I’ve been doing it ever since.
Any postseason goals?
Our team is hoping to win sectionals this year because we feel like we have a good team. We didn’t really lose any seniors (from last season). We have a good chance. I’m hoping to place and medal in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle (at state).
What’s on your iPod before a race?
Kid Cudi, “Soundtrack to My Life.” I’ve listened to that, but usually behind the blocks when I’m stretching I don’t have my iPod. There’s no one there to take it. I don’t want to set it down because somebody will probably steal it. Just focus, basically.
If you could pick a different sport to compete in, what would you pick?
Probably water polo. I’m not the best player, but I’ve been doing that since freshman year, and I’ve been swimming for nine years.
What is something the average sports fans doesn’t know about swimming?
It’s a pretty intense sport, and it takes a lot of time. It’s more of a lifestyle than a sport, actually, because you devote so much time. You’re in the pool six, seven hours a day. It’s a lot of time and hard work.
Who is your celebrity prom date?
I (recently) watched “Horrible Bosses.” Even though she’s sort of old, I’ll say Jennifer Aniston.
What will you remember most about Lincoln-Way North?
It’s a new school, and we get to start new traditions. With the people there, it’s just a lot of good memories.
What’s your favorite event?
Mostly distance freestyle, but I’ll say the 500 in the high school season. In the summer season, I like swimming the 800 meter because it’s a longer distance — but not too long.
North coach Pat Shaughnessy coaches swimming and water polo. What’s the dynamic like?
It’s good that he’s coach for both sports. He’s an intense guy, and he expects us to work hard, be there every day. We expect the same from him.
What’s your deserted island food?
Pasta. I love pasta. My mom’s fettuccine alfredo.
Who do you want to beat in the lane next to you?
(Homewood-Flossmoor’s) Luke Dobben. He was a great competitor.
Ten years from now ...
Hopefully, I’ll have a good job, starting a family and we’ll see where my swimming career goes. If it goes well, maybe still in that.
As told to Tim O’Brien
