Former Mokena School District 159 Supt. Karen Perry, who was demoted to assistant superintendent before this school year, will take over as Oakwood Community Unit School District 76 superintendent effective July 1, according to the District 76 website.
The district, based in downstate Fithian, chose her from a field of 12 candidates.
“Mrs. Perry emerged as the front-runner from a group of superb and highly qualified finalists for the position. Her intelligence, experience, personal warmth, her focus on all students, and collaborative approach make her ideal for our school district and community,” the district said.
Perry, who is in the final year of her three-year contract, was demoted after notifying district officials last summer that she wouldn’t return for the 2012-13 school year.
The district is struggling financially, as voters rejected proposed property tax hikes three times during Perry’s two years as superintendent.
