Residents recently attended a spring gardening lecture at Mokena Public Library titled, “Lawns Begone: Groundcovers Rule” presented by Kathleen Obirek, a certified landscape designer and educator.

Obirek’s lecture covered several types of perennial groundcovers, which are an alternative to turf grass. Residents learned which groundcovers grow well under trees, which are drought-tolerant and which ones are quick spreaders or slow creepers.

“Everyone left inspired to go home and plant a tapestry of colorful, reliable and interesting groundcovers that will put the ‘wow’ into their landscape,” library officials said in a news release.

Residents left with handouts, and a few prize-winners went home with plants to start their groundcover landscaping.
