Frankfort’s Hickory Creek Middle School eighth-graders Allison Goldsmith, Regan Sandburg and Sydney Zeller placed third in the state out of 1700 teams in the spring session of The Stock Market Game.

The game teaches students about investment decisions and how to research companies.

Student teams begin with a virtual cash account of $100,000, with which they create and manage a portfolio that may include stocks, mutual funds and bonds. Teams conduct research, evaluate potential investments and decide how to invest their cash based on what they have learned.

The third place team would not share their stock purchases with anyone until the game was over. It turned out their secret investment was Groupon, and they increased their profits by $14,000 in two months, according to teacher Michelle Sommer.

The classes of eighth grade teachers Cherie O’Brien, Sharon Komarck, Diane Haas and Katie Duff, in addition to Sommer’s, participated in the game from February through April.

Prior to their third place at state, Goldsmith, Sandburg and Zeller won regionals and the team of Ethan Turnstall, Brian Burns and Hunter Smith placed fourth in regionals.

Sommer said, “It was fun to see the kids’ eyes light up when they realized this was a real-time, real-world activity as stock prices fluctuated before their eyes.”
