Students in prekindergarten through second grade at Grand Prairie Elementary School in Frankfort recently collected items to send as care packages to soldiers serving overseas as part of Frankfort School District 157-C’s Character Counts character education program.

The school has been sending packages to soldiers since 2006 through the efforts of teachers Becky Cleveland and Carolyn Stanek, who have sons serving in the military.

Students were able to wear pajamas to school for a day if they collected enough items to fill 16 boxes, and could have an all-school celebration if they filled 32 boxes.

The students’ progress was tracked via a large paper thermometer that was posted on a wall in the school’s main hallway.
