Eli Ramirez, of Frankfort, recently earned his Eagle Scout badge.

Ramirez graduated from Lincoln-Way North High School in June. As a student, he was awarded Music Student of the Year and received awards in jazz, orchestra and choir. He also was drum major for the Marching Phoenix during his junior and senior years.

Ramirez planted more than 6,300 native Illinois plants by the first tee at Square Links Golf Course as part of his Eagle Scout project. The plants will create a root system to help with rain water management, which will help with flooding in nearby areas. Birds will also find a diverse collection of new insects to feed on in the bed of plants.

The project involved 200 man hours and the assistance of many Scouts and friends.

Ramirez is attending the University of North Texas, where he will major in music education. He plans to be a high school choir director.
