Here is a look at what Southlanders are accomplishing in college.
News from the SouthtownStar’s Central region includes Homer Glen, Crestwood, Frankfort, Orland Park, New Lenox, Oak Forest, Tinley Park and Mokena.
Ashland University
Erika Powers, of Homer Glen, was accepted for the fall 2013 semester and received the Provost’s Scholarship to attend Ashland (Ohio) University. Powers is a senior at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox.
Emerson College
Sean Pieroth, of Crestwood, is a theater design and technology major at Emerson College in Boston and has been cast as associate lighting designer in Emerson Stage’s production of “Tartuffe.”
Hope College
Amanda Littleton, of Frankfort, participated as an odd-year moraler in the Pull, one of the nation’s oldest college traditions, at Hope College in Holland, Mich.
Lewis University
Matthew Pall, of Orland Park, and the flight team from Lewis University in Romeoville qualified for national competition after placing second in the Region VIII Safecon event in Indiana. Pall competed in navigation, short-field landing, message drop, computer accuracy and simulated comprehensive aircraft navigation.
University of Illinois
Gina Lynne Cernyar, of New Lenox, received the William Chandler Bagley Scholarship and a Wheeler Foundation Scholarship from the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Penny Paraskis, of Oak Forest, received the William Chandler Bagley Scholarship from the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
University of Iowa
Several area students received bachelor’s degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

University of St. Francis
Jessica L. Nayder, of Mokena, was named a 2012 student laureate of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois, honoring her overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.
Gov. Pat Quinn, president of the Lincoln Academy, will present Nayder with the student laureate medallion, a certificate of achievement and a monetary grant. Nayder is a student at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.
